Middlefield woman helps other cancer survivors

Middlefield resident Christine Willet met the disease under those circumstances, and in 2009 created After the Storm, a nonprofit organization to help breast cancer survivors heal emotionally, physically, mentally and monetarily after diagnoses.

"My right side had always been itchy during my second pregnancy," Willet said. "There was a big lump when I went to scratch. I knew from the moment I felt it that it wasn't good."

Three weeks after finding the lump, Willet went to her doctor.

"I was waiting there by myself when the radiologist came in and said, 'we don't like what we see,'" she said.

The next day, Willet was meeting with Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center surgeon Andrea Malon for a needle biopsy. Four days later, her fear was confirmed - StageIIB breast cancer.

"There was no tip-toeing around it," Willet said. "Malon went right into, 'this is what we're going to do.'"

Only 30 years old at the time, Willet was told the hormones from pregnancy likely made the cancer come out quicker. Tumors normally take six to eight years to become detectable, she said.

"I think being pregnant was a blessing," she said. "I felt very lucky that it was extremely quick."

Willet had a mastectomy, removing 20 lymph nodes in the area. Three weeks later, she was told it was time to have her second son. A week after Chase was born, Willet was able to have scans done to determine if the cancer had metastasized.

"Those scans when you don't know, and the waiting, I think that was the worst part," Willet said.

Two weeks after finding out that the cancer had not spread, Willet started chemotherapy.

"There was no fooling around," she said.

Willet, a math teacher at Green Acres Elementary School in North Haven, finished chemo treatments on Aug. 30, 2010, and went back to school the next day.

"The chemo wasn't that bad," Willet said. "I did the laundry, I went on vacation. I did whatever needed to be done. school was absolutely supportive."

Chemo was followed by six weeks of radiation and the hormone treatment herceptin.

Willet also took part in a clinical trial of the drug triptorelin, but after two years started getting joint pains in her knees.

"I got off of that because it got too debilitating," she said.

The left over joint pain spurred Willet's interest in integrative medicine, which helped ease her pain. At the time, Middlesex Hospital had only a part-time reflexologist on staff.
