Seven former champs in Ray Fischer field

— How low can they go?

That’s the question heading into this weekend’s Ray Fischer State Medal Play Championship at Riverside Golf Course.

A total of 200 golfers will tee off Friday in the 72-hole event that features the state’s top amateur players. Taylor Johnson of Oconomowoc is the defending champion but is not entered.

Seven former Fischer champions are in the field, including 2006 winner Matt Behm of Janesville. Behm is the tournament and course record-holder after blistering the par-72 Riverside Course with a 10-under 62 en route to the 2006 title.

Other past champions scheduled to compete are South Milwaukee’s Archie Dadian and Pat Boyle, Kenosha’s John Pallin, Menasha’s Bob Gregorski, Racine’s Bruce Hansen and Franklin’s Brent Wong.

Dadian won the title in 1982, the first year tournament was played at Riverside. It has been here ever since.

Austin Ehlenfeldt of Waupun finished one shot behind Johnson last year. The recent UW-Green Bay graduate knows birdies will be plentiful.

“It’s definitely a shootout tournament. but that’s what makes it so much fun,” Ehlenfeldt said. “You try to get as many birdies as you can without losing focus on each and every shot. You can’t get ahead of yourself because there are some tougher holes.

“But it’s a fun course to play, and I know I always look forward to coming down there and playing. It will probably take four rounds of 67 or better to have a chance, and hopefully, I can put myself in that position.”

Behm leads a list of nine Janesville golfers entered. He advanced to the quarterfinals of the WSGA State Match Play Tournament last week. Other Janesville golfers entered are Kevin Riley, Jordan Brovick, Sam Van Galder, Jake Downing, Ryan Coffey, Ryne Clatworthy, Aaron Rondon and Michael Hesselman.

Burlington native and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is playing in his fourth straight Fischer.

QBs in battle to lead T-Wolves - The Pueblo Chieftain: Local

Joe Vigil wants the entire Colorado State University-Pueblo football team to look up to him.

He's speaking figuratively, of course, as he's listed at a generous 5-foot-8 on the team's roster.

"I've been taught that all the great quarterbacks were great leaders and that their teammates looked up to them. I want to be that guy," Vigil said Wednesday as the ThunderWolves continue preparations for their season opener Sept. 6 against Oklahoma Panhandle State.

Though head coach John Wristen hasn't released an official depth chart - one is expected later this week - he said Wednesday that Vigil is the team's starting quarterback.

"Joe's the starter right now, based on his leadership abilities," Wristen said. "We'll travel with three QBs and I'm comfortable with the ones we have in camp. They all are learning their roles and learning the offense. But Joe was here in the spring and he's a born leader. He's taken control of the team and he's my guy right now."

Two Division I prospects Ñ one from Bowling Green and another from Colorado Ñ completed spring ball but didn't return to school this fall. That left Vigil as the lone player with any knowledge of the 4-inch thick playbook.

That gave him a boost over Adams State College transfer Bobby Washington (6-3) and freshmen Sean Gavin (6-5), Will Paddock (6-5) and Adam Winick (6-1).

"This is like a full-time job right now. If we're not on the field or in meetings, we're at home studying," Vigil said. "I want to be that guy under center on Sept. 6 and I want to be the leader of this team."

Vigil, a 19-year-old freshman from Littleton High School, understands the offense and is fast. He said arm strength is something he continues to work on.

"We've got great competition in camp and those guys push me to work harder every day," he said. "I've learned a lot from Bobby and Sean already."

Washington, a 20-year-old sophomore, started several games at Adams State and knows what it takes to play quarterback in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. He said the ThunderWolves are on the right track.

"This is more like a Division I schedule than Division II practices," Washington said. "I'm still trying to learn the system and learn the plays. All the quarterbacks get along because we all want to win a championship here."

Wristen said Washington possesses lots of raw talent and "is learning his role here. He's a great natural athlete."

Gavin, 17, is a freshman from Canyon High School in California. He learned of CSU-Pueblo by word-of-mouth and said he made the right choice of schools.
