Outdoors: taking quality nature photos easier than ever

Earlier this summer, I was invited by a publishing company to provide some photos of fishing scenes for the covers of books on fishing. And I recently finished selecting photos for the fall issue of the "Lake Ontario Outdoors" magazine as part of my job as editor. These two tasks reminded me that the outdoor photography is easier than ever, yet many people fail to achieve good or very, photos. Be aware that professional photographers set the camera on manual to get everything perfect (eg, exposure, shutter speed, etc.). An AE will see something different. But you can still take good pictures in automatic mode as long as you realize that your camera records the average amount of light, not necessarily in the foreground dark and so are ideal for telephoto close-ups and the removal some unwanted objects or clutter in your photo. But be aware that when you increase the magnification, the movement of your hand will be easy to blur the objects you intend to capture. Just try some crank on your camera or telephoto magnification of your telescope rifle and set on an object that fills the frame.See how difficult it is to keep the camera and the object stable? Try the same techniques that hunters use: find an object to stabilize your hand or forearm on. Rest your hand with the camera on a solid object, if possible. Better still use a small tripod or a clip to hold it still. I have two "pods Gorilla" with three flexible legs that can fit on an object like a table or wrap around a tree branch or even the car window partially open. If the fish was flop on deck or in the cooler for a time, dip it in water to make it look fresh and sparkling.Add an image of the fisherman and the fish with a nice background to remind people of the institution or help capture the moment in pictures. Even when he is not some fish to show, these shots of people fishing with the boat or the pleasant scenery and make shots to help tell a story. Look for interesting angles or objects in the foreground add depth. Wildlife Photos are always nice, but often the result of chance. Be around when the animals are often seen and always carrying your camera can pay off. Stay calm and let the birds or animals get used to you and do not try to go directly to them to get closer.

RiverDogs come up short | The Post and Courier, Charleston SC ...

The game was tied 5-5 entering the seventh after back-and-forth action all night.

Jeremy Nowak hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning to give Delmarva the lead.

Charleston tied the game in the fourth inning in a highly unusual fashion.

It began when Jose Toussen bunted with two outs, reaching first base due to a throwing error by starting pitcher Jacob Pettit. In the process, Jeff Farnham reached home.

With Anderson Feliz at the plate, Toussen appeared to be caught stealing second, but the umpire ruled Pettit balked, thus allowing Toussen to claim the base safely. On the very next pitch, Feliz hit an RBI single.

"The home plate umpire has the best view of that," Charleston manager Aaron Ledesma said.

"It's all about direction of the pitcher's foot, and obviously he thought he took a stride toward first base."

Charleston's first run came in the third inning off a Gary Sanchez home run. The long ball was Sanchez's second in as many nights.

"Sanchez has been getting some quality at-bats for us," Ledesma said. "He's working his tail off and it's showing."

But, in the seventh inning, right-handed pitcher Thomas Kahnle walked three batters, including first baseman Adam Gaylord, to bring home Ty Kelly and give Delmarva a 6-5 lead.

The RiverDogs didn't leave without making things interesting, however.

With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Sanchez singled and Flores doubled to give Kelvin De Leon an opportunity to win the game for Charleston. But the game ended on a flyout to the left fielder.
