73-year-old Canadian man builds pirate ship
NEWVILLE, NEWFOUNDLAND (CBC NEWS/CNN) - A self-proclaimed pirate from Newfoundland has built a ship entirely on his own and after a failed first launch attempt that struck a rock - the modern-day buccaneer is sailing around his home.
Since the Golden Eagle's first attempt, more than a thousand people have visited Newville to get a glimpse of the pirate ship and witness its second chance at staying afloat.
"Absolute she's going to make it, it's a beautiful boat, she has to go, so she's going to make it for sure," Sharon Dominey, a friend of the self-proclaimed pirate, said.
John Keefe, or the "Pirate of Newville," has already survived one mutiny attempt.
During last week's attempted launch, Keefe's brother tried to stop it over a land dispute, and Keefe had to call the cops.
A week later, as the boat nudges closer to the sea, even the pirate had his doubts and feared his four-year dream would end up in a bonfire.
The heavy ship weighed on her wooden brace, snapping the logs as the excavator pushed her along.
"Before I wasn't sure if she would float or sink, but whether it was float or sink, she had to go in the water," Keefe said.
The 73-year-old built the ship entirely on his own with his mantra, "I did it my way," scrawled on the boat.
Three hours of nail-biting and one might push later and the boat hit the water.
"It's wonderful to see so many people happy for dad and I'm overwhelmed and I'm so impressed, it's amazing," his daughter, Joan Gilley, said.
"I think everything's the best part, the pirate part, the eagle, I find it all amazing," fan Taylor Rice said.
But there's no rest for the Pirate of Newville, who will immediately begin building a wharf for his prized possession.
"Once I get going for treasure, somewhere, pirate treasure, I don't know where, but get to search, I mean no good to have a pirate ship if you don't have the treasure, is it," Keefe said.
So while one chapter of the Golden Eagle ends, it seems this ship's story is only the beginning.

Basically, the goal of the game is to make a boat that can sail through a river to get to the end of the map. It has a lot of building options but the only problem I can see is that I can get pretty far through the river on a wooden plank with a seat on it. It's pretty fun actually.
