Mom admits leaving kids alone in feces-filled home
Chelsea Champey, the Bristol mother whose child neglect case made national headlines when police found her three small children home alone in a feces-filled home, pleaded guilty today in Bucks County Court in Doylestown.
Champey, 22, will be sentenced in about 60 days and could face up to 18 months in prison. Defense lawyers asked for the delay so that Champey could undergo a mental health evaluation.
Champey's children, ages 2, 4 and 1, were placed in foster care in February, after a police officer responded to an abandoned 911 call from her rented Spruce Street home and saw a young child peeking out a window.
The little boy opened the door and told the officer that his mother wasn't home. Police later determined that Chelsea had left the children in the care of a family member who left them alone after he'd gotten into a fight with a woman who threatened to call police.
Once inside, the officer saw an open bottle of liquor on the table, as well as the remains of a marijuana cigarette in an ashtray. Under the table was "feces that that did not appear to look like that of a domestic pet, but appeared to be human," police reports show.
In the kitchen, the officer found food scattered on the floor. Bags filled with rotted food were stacked against the refrigerator.
"Much of the food in the home was found to be beyond its expiration date, including toddler food," the report states.
Upstairs, police found rooms filled with dirty laundry and more feces. On a nightstand was an open box of razor blades. The home had no running water and the tub was encrusted with a pinkish substance that had solidified.
"The tub appeared to have not been used in days or weeks," the report said.
A 1-year-old girl was found inside a feces-smeared crib. More feces was on the carpet.
The most shocking evidence was found on the third floor. Behind a door, which was bolted from the outside, was a 2-year-old girl. She was naked and covered head to toe in feces.
Scrape marks on the door showed that she had tried to claw her way out of the room, police said.
The child was at the top of a stairwell. There was no safety gate to keep her from falling down the stairs. Every piece of furniture in the room, as well as the walls, were smeared with feces.
The children were taken downstairs and seated on a couch while police waited for social workers to arrive. One little girl pulled a cookie from between the filthy couch cushions and began to eat it.
