Chapter 5: Family Problems
I found this chapter to be an important and appealing one. Family is an important concept to me and the sociological perspective on family is a unique one. I found the chapter to be enlightening and thought provoking. Needless to say my fascination and desire for family is what drove me to explore this chapter further.
First I think it is important to define family. According to the book Understanding Social Problems, family is defined as:
a kinship system of all relatives living together or recognized as a social unit, including adopted personsThe three perspectives are again used in helping to sort through reasons and definitions of family.
First perspective- Structural Functionalist Perspective:
- Family performs functions that help society:
1) Replenishes population
2) Socializes children
3) Provides emotional and physical care for its members
Second perspective- Conflict Perspective:
- Focuses on how social class and power influence marriages and families
- Racial and ethnic differences in families are related to the lower socioeconomic status of racial and ethnic minorities
Third perspective- Symbolic Interactionist Perspective:
- Concered with social meanings and definitions of divorce, single parenthood and cohabitation
- As meanings become less negative, behaviors become more common
- When family members label each other, they may act according to that label (2011)
There were a lot of powerful messages and information from chapter 5 but marriage was one of the main topics that I found the most appealing.
