Letter: Junk science
One reader recently reproached the Gazette for not reporting on “the poisonous results of fluoride being put in drinking water.” The only scientific or statistical evidence given is the “Fluoride Action Network.” That website is typical of the one-cause paranoia that prints all information that supports its cause. Others of that ilk were against smallpox vaccination and polio inoculation in the past, and recently against measles, diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough inoculation. It’s no contest that high amounts of fluoride are toxic. Fluorine is present in groundwater in many places. Deaf Smith County in Texas has historically had citizens with mottled teeth from the unadulterated groundwater high in fluoride. Most poisoning results from ingesting insecticides, pesticides and other household products. Fluoride toothpaste and other dental products are not intended to be swallowed and should be kept away from children, In 2006, the US National Research Council’s (NRC) expert fluoride panel reviewed fluoride toxicology and concluded, “It’s apparent that fluorides have the ability to interfere with the functions of the brain.” And, “Fluorides also increase the production of free radicals in the brain through several different biological pathways. These changes have a bearing on the possibility that fluorides act to increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.” (3) " Whoever wrote this letter is questionable, I guarantee this person has an agenda. Why would you want Fluoride in your water to ingest? All the studies show it works topically, not internally.
