Zachary Berg completes Eagle Scout project at high school

Zachary – a trumpet player since fifth grade – contemplated project ideas, but it wasn’t until a recent band trip that Band Director Jason Dobbs had mentioned the need for a new storage shed, located in the practice field at Crestwood High School. Zachary says the project appealed to him because he had wanted to create something that he would be able to come back and see as he grows older. The storage shed is where the band houses much of the equipment that is used for practice sessions and contests during marching season. “We couldn’t really take the equipment out from the band room, so we have a second set out here,” explained Zachary. “The former shed was too small, and it was a really big hassle to put everything away and then get it back out.” Tom Kubik, of Camp-Site RV in Cresco, is one of the many project donors. Kubik has helped out with Eagle Scout projects in the past and says he sees the great importance of community volunteerism. “With obtaining this rank, [Zachary] needs to go out and meet businesspeople and leaders in the community, and it makes his connection to the community better,” said Kubik. “He gets to understand who’s out there to take care of things around town, and someday he may be in the same position as some of the rest of us.” Dianne Anderson, of Cresco Kiwanis and superintendent of the Howard-Winneshiek Community School District, says she is in awe by all of the steps a Boy Scout must take in order to obtain Eagle Scout status. “They need to go out and first see if the project is something that can be done, he then takes it to the School Board and finally gets approval,” she said. “He saw the whole process from beginning to end, and I think that’s so important. It says a lot for the Boy Scouts of America. He learned a lot.
