'Shark Tank' star signs on as resident Babson entrepreneur
Abson College students will get an inside look at just what it takes to be a “shark” this fall.Daymond John, star of the ABC-TV series “Shark Tank” and creator of the FUBU clothing brand, has signed on as an entrepreneur-in-residence at the Wellesley business school.
John visited the campus in April to judge a student Rocket Pitch business competition and spoke about his own experiences as an entrepreneur, and both students and faculty “loved” him, according to Elizabeth Thornton, a Babson lecturer in entrepreneurship.
“He embodied everything we value and teach at Babson, like creating opportunity, loving what you do, learning from mistakes,” Thornton said. “The biggest thing we really liked was he was a really successful entrepreneur who had strong moral values and integrity and is really making a difference in the world.”
The 42-year-old John, who’ll donate his time to Babson, has appeared in both seasons of “Shark Tank,” a reality entrepreneurial business show that debuted in 2009. As one of five wealthy businesspeople, or “sharks,” he listens to pitches from everyday people looking to launch a company or product and then decides whether to invest his own money in the ventures.
John started the FUBU (“For Us By Us”) urban sportswear brand in the early 1990s, making and selling tie-top hats on the streets of Queens before landing a deal with Macy’s and eventually growing sales to $350 million in 1998 — and a reported $6 billion to date. He’s branched out to other businesses and is a sought-after branding expert and motivational speaker.
John, who was not available for comment, will teach a management consulting field experience course to Babson grad students, selecting a team to help with a product launch through his spin-off Shark Branding business.
“The team will work with him during the semester to evaluate opportunities, develop a marketing plan, a launch strategy and social media campaign,” Thornton said. “In essence, they’ll learn how to be a ‘shark’ for a broad range of portfolio projects in which Daymond has either invested in on the show or through other opportunities.
John will begin his Babson tenure in September, speaking at the start of the Foundations in Management and Entrepreneurship course that requires all freshmen to start and run a business. The entrepreneur-in-residence also will give the keynote address at the 10th annual Babson Entrepreneurship Forum in November, which draws mores than 800 people and is streamed live to other universities in 15 countries.

Redwoods Conversations | What Is A Social Entrepreneur?
“Social entrepreneurship is a process by which citizens build or transform institutions to advance solutions to social problems, such as poverty, illness, illiteracy, environmental destruction, human rights abuses and corruption, in order to make life better for many.”
- David Bornstein and Susan Davis “Social Entrepreneurship: What Everyone Needs To Know”
At The Redwoods Group, we believe in our mission “To protect and improve the quality of life in the communities we serve.” In order to truly accomplish this mission we know that we have to tackle some pretty big issues. We don’t back down from them, and instead we try to embrace them. Issues like child abuse and drowning prevention aren’t easy to deal with, but we recognize their importance and we want to help our communities in their efforts to eradicate them.
Ashoka , an organization that strives to shape a global, entrepreneurial, competitive citizen sector, has another way to define social entrepreneurship. “Rather than leaving societal needs to the government or business sectors,” they say, “social entrepreneurs find what is not working and solve the problem by changing the system, spreading the solution, and persuading entire societies to take new leaps.”
The Redwoods Group takes this message to heart. We are not just in the business of insurance, but rather the business of prevention and healing. We share our data, experience and recommendations with everyone to help create safer communities.
