Lolo Jones can't seem to hurdle the disappointments
It's unfortunately become an all too familiar sight.
For the second time in three years, Jones was unable to make it out of the semifinal round of the 100m hurdles at the USA Outdoor Championships. After two call-ups and a false start, Jones was unable to get out of the blocks quickly, essentially dooming her chances at the gun.
She finished the race in 12.81 seconds, third best in the heat. The top two finishers in each of the three semifinals advanced automatically as did the next two fastest times. Jones had the third-fastest time remaining, ending her pursuit of a spot on the U.S. team for the World Championships in Daegu.
The event was eventually won by Kellie Wells, who ran a world-leading 12.50 in the final.
"It's just obvious disappointment," Jones said in describing her emotions. "I'm speechless. This whole year has been just crazy. I've been battling injuries, getting into races and getting last or fourth. It's just like, ‘Gosh, when can I catch a break.'"
If we all supposedly reap the seeds we sowed in a previous life, than the prior incarnation of Jones must have been a serial killer judging by what she has endured.
There was missing the Olympic team in 2004, to the hurdle she clipped just metes away from gold in Beijing, to the hamstring injury that spoiled her 2009 season, to her late-season swoon in 2010, to her heel, ankle and leg injuries this year.
The last thing Jones needed was this.
"Well, the Olympics is obviously numero uno," Jones said, ranking her career disappointments. "Then you have the first Olympic team, not making that. This is right there. It's crazy but I've had all of these downs but I've also had a lot of ups."
Jones was hopeful that her season was on the upswing after she won her opening heat with a smooth, clean finish in 12.73 on Saturday. But clean and smooth is hardly how you would describe the start of her semifinal.
On the first two attempts to get the race going, officials called the runners out of the blocks after a lengthy hold. On the third try, Kristi Castlin false started. She protested the ruling, which allowed her to stay in the field, but the disqualification was upheld.
Athletes have been complaining all weekend about the starting conditions. The most vocal has been men's 110m hurdles champion David Oliver, who won on Saturday in a rather-slow-by-his-standards 13.05. After Jones missed the final, Oliver Tweeted, "USATF employed some of the worst starters I have ever seen. Downright ridiculous...," and, "Everybody asking me why I didn't get out the blocks in the race, can't take chances with these clowns.

She has also battled a sciatic nerve problem since the indoor season, which she says has "affected the whole left side of my body." Jones likens what she has experienced here to her failure to make the Olympic Team in 2004.
