Improvements in Engineered Hardwood Flooring

Over the last few years, engineered floors have grown and changed quite a bit.  In fact, they are now the top choice of most North Texas homeowners because of their durability and lower cost of installation .

The first engineered floors got a bit of a bad reputation.  They were made of HDF backing or something similar with a  thin solid wood wear layer.  They were not terrible floors, but they did not always withstand the stress of high traffic and age.

Also, the width of the first engineered floors maxed out at 3-1/4”.  That meant no wide-plank looks.  All that has changed.

Now most engineered floords are mounted on a cross-hatched plywood base. The thicknesses of the boards range up to ¾” thick.  As the thickness of the overall planks has increased so have the top layers – often available in a 1/4” or more layer of real wood.  This means the possibility of refinishing if necessary down the road.  The widths of the products have increased to 5” and 7” planks (and wider!) as well.

Installation methods have also improved.  At first, engineered hardwood pieces had to be glued together as a floating floor, but as the boards have evolved most of them can be nailed, stapled or glued as well.

The latest installation method is “click and lock.”  This has been adapted from the laminate floor fittings and is a quick method for floating a floor with very little gluing or nail.  (This process does require a padding layer for sound muffling.
