Beat the heat this summer with these cool recipes

Don’t let the summer heat slow you down; beat the heat with a frosty treat.

Break out the blender and ice cream maker and cool down with summer heat busters like smoothies, slushies, granitas, sorbets, frozen yogurt and of course, ice cream. Few things are as irresistible as ice cream in the summertime and with July being National Ice Cream Month, there is no better time to indulge in this cold, creamy delight.

Staying cool during the dog days of summer can be challenging. The summer heat inspires us to sip a variety of icy, cold drinks and prepare light, cool foods.

I have certain drinks or treats that evoke happy memories and epitomize summer, such as sharing a refreshing pitcher of fresh squeezed lemonade, sipping sweet tea on the porch on a lazy summer afternoon or churning a batch of homemade ice cream at a family picnic.

My fondest childhood memories are of those sitting on a hand-crank ice-cream freezer while my brother and cousins cranked and churned the ice cream until they thought their arms where going to fall off. Homemade ice cream is easier to make than you may think and can be a fun activity for the whole family.

As a treat lover, sometimes it is hard for me to go through the day without one. In the summer, I am more apt to look to the freezer for refreshing sweet treats such as frozen fruit. These are like ice pops but even healthier (and easier to make).

Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper, and then arrange fruit, such as raspberries, blueberries, sliced peaches, bananas, mangos or grapes, in a single layer on top. Freeze, then transfer to small freezer bags.

Freezing fruit brings out their natural flavors and gives them an almost creamy texture. They make a great snack all by themselves, but they are also delicious when sprinkled on top ice cream or frozen yogurt, or blended into a smoothie.

A smoothie makes a quick “to go” breakfast as well as a refreshing between-meals snack. Frozen fruit will satisfy a sweet tooth while providing a good source of vitamins and fiber.

Another cool thing to do with fresh fruit is to place cut up pieces in ice cube trays and then top with water or fruit juice and freeze. Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, cherries, oranges and lemons all freeze well and make eye-catching ice cubes for your summer drinks.

n Watermelon slush is a delicious frozen drink with just the right amount of sweetness. Combine 1 cup water, 2 cups chopped watermelon, 1 tablespoon lemon juice and 2 tablespoons sugar in a blender. Fill with ice and blend until smooth. Garnish with a watermelon wedge and slice of lemon.

Hello b015dwj. You will want to test the grid cutter and make sure it is good. It should read closed for continuity. If it is good, you will need to test and see if there is power coming to the transformer and from the transformer to the grid cutter. You should have 120 VAC coming to the transformer. It is low voltage coming out and you should read between 8 to 12 VAC. If not, you will need to replace the transformer. Hope this helps.
