Okla. towns eye split of ConocoPhillips operations

Business leaders in the northern Oklahoma towns of Bartlesville and Ponca City, where ConocoPhillips has deep roots, were hopeful that their communities would benefit after the energy company announced Thursday that it would split into two companies.

ConocoPhillips spokesman John Roper said he anticipates "most people will keep their jobs" through the split into a company that produces oil and another that refines it into gasoline and other fuels, although he couldn't address specifics. He said there will "have to be a wall" between the new companies, but that "they will co-exist."

"Oklahoma is part of our history and it's key to ConocoPhillips," Roper said.

Houston-based ConocoPhillips, created by a 2002 merger, now has about 3,500 employees in Bartlesville and about 840 in Ponca City out of a total work force of about 29,600.

The company's "shared services" employees, such as those in accounting, tax and excise services, human resources, general marketing, procurement and financial management groups, are located in Bartlesville, company spokeswoman Summer Austin said. ConocoPhillips has a refinery operation in Ponca City.

"Our community has experienced many changes of the company through the years," said Sherri Wilt, the president of the Bartlesville Regional Chamber of Commerce. "We've been successful in the past living with those changes and we will continue to do so. The company has been committed to Bartlesville and I'm optimistic that commitment is going to continue."

Conoco was created in Ponca City in 1929 through the merger of Marland Oil Co. -- started by Ponca City icon and former Gov. E.W. Marland -- and Continental Oil and Transportation Co., which was founded in 1875. Conoco later moved its headquarters to Houston.

Brothers Frank and L.E. Phillips started Phillips Petroleum Co. in Bartlesville in 1917. But since Phillips' headquarters left Bartlesville following the merger with Conoco, the company has increased its presence in the town of about 35,000, Wilt said.

"It didn't hurt us like everybody thought it would," she said. "We weathered that and we've come out of it stronger. ... This split will make the company stronger and that will only benefit our community."

Ponca City took a hit from ConocoPhillips in February 2009, when the company said it planned to move 750 non-refinery jobs out of the city of about 26,000 to Bartlesville and Houston. But the refinery has remained a key part of ConocoPhillips' operations, Roper said.
