Does anyone really want to shuck the jury system?
Don't expect a similar "Declaration of Regret" in the Casey Anthony murder case. On July 5, after an 11-hour deliberation, the Florida panel returned an acquittal on all felony counts against Anthony, 25, charged in the 2008 death of her 2-year-old daughter. Almost universally condemned, the verdict ended the 35-day, televised capital trial. Millions of armchair jurors had tuned in and become heavily, if not obsessively, invested in the outcome of a tragic case involving tiny Caylee Anthony whose skeletal remains eventually turned up in woods near the Anthony family home.The stunning verdict left a lot of pundits sputtering - those who'd predicted a far different outcome. A chagrined Andrew Cohen said it best: "You could argue that never before in the history of criminal trials in America have so many who pretended to know so much for so long been so wrong so quickly," Cohen wrote in the "The Atlantic." Cohen, also a legal analyst for CBS News, admitted that the quick verdict prompted him to predict, moments before jurors returned, that the state had prevailed. (Anthony was convicted only on four misdemeanor counts of lying to police.).

It's been 16 years since O.J. Simpson swaggered out of a southern California courtroom a free man. Jurors in the eight-month televised case took four hours to decide they must acquit since the gloves, as defense attorney Johnnie Cochran admonished, did not fit. In years since, none of those jurors, to my knowledge, has wished he or she could snatch back the much pilloried verdict in the brutal knife slayings of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman.
Closer to home, not a single juror who voted to convict Oklahoma City pharmacist Jerome Jay Ersland of first-degree murder is among the 17,000 outraged Oklahomans who, in support of Ersland, have petitioned Gov. Mary Fallin for redress in the case. The 59-year-old disabled Army veteran reported to prison July 12 for fatally shooting an unarmed 16-year-old robber inside Reliable Discount Pharmacy two years ago. Prosecutors claimed that the fallen robber, Antwun "Speedy" Parker, was unconscious from a shot to the head when Ersland retrieved a second gun and shot him five more times.
