3-pool design selected for S.F. Veterans Memorial

A city monument honoring those who served in the armed forces will take the shape of three reflection pools, as outlined in a winning proposal by two California artists.

The winning design for the San Francisco Veterans Memorial was chosen from three finalists. It will be built between the War Memorial Opera House and the Veterans Building. Of the $2.5 million needed for the project, $1.7 million has been raised.

The monument will consist of the three pools encircling an octagon of stone. The pools form a circle of water that glides over polished stone from the street to the garden below - a movement intended to symbolize the merging of heaven (the circle) and earth (the octagon).

Visitors will walk through the memorial on a walkway above the water. Basalt walls on both sides of the path will reflect passers-by's images; the west wall will be inscribed with "The Young Dead Soldiers Do Not Speak," a poem by Archibald MacLeish, who served in World War I.

"As I worked on this project, I thought a lot about those who, like my father, passed through San Francisco on their way to combat overseas and how for many of them, this was the last American land they saw," said artist Susan Narduli, who submitted the proposal with San Francisco landscape architect Andrea Cochran, in a statement.

The design is the result of a nationwide design competition conducted by the San Francisco Arts Commission. The memorial is scheduled to be formally dedicated on Veterans Day 2013.
