The Root of It All: Strange tree growths may be caused by herbicide
I have noticed strange, new growth on my pine, spruce and on many of my shrubs and perennials. They are bent and twisted, and some look like the growing tips are dying. I have enclosed a picture of my white pine. We recently had our lawn treated for broadleaf weeds, could the chemical used be causing these problems? Or do you think it might be a disease or insect? — Rose, Racine
Diseases and insects are very often species specific; environmental and chemical damage tends to be non-specific. The damage you describe, as well as what is visible in your photograph looks very much like herbicide injury.There are several commonly used herbicides that act as growth regulators and can lead to twisting and failure to thrive, such as 2,4-D and dicamba. These documents are available for homeowners to purchase and are used to kill weeds in turf. Under certain environmental conditions, if poorly implemented or applied too often, these chemicals can cause twisting, stunting and death of landscape plants.
However, this year there is a new herbicide used for the first time by many professional lawn care in Wisconsin called Imprelis which was associated with a distortion of growth and damage to evergreens and other landscape plants . Current recommendations are to not use Imprelis if a landscape contains white pine or Norway spruce.
The maker of Imprelis, DuPont, is actively gathering information about this situation to determine the variables involved and the cause of these symptoms. Contact your lawn care professional to find out if Imprelis was applied and when. Plants affected by this chemical may grow out of the twisted growth, but take care to keep the plant stress-free by watering during dry periods. Do not prune or fertilize for at least one year to minimize new growth.

Hey man, was the hill you were on in SoCal? I have some land there… anyhow, I stopped by and found all my plants wrecked that I planted on my hill. My buddy drove by, saw a guy and some kids cutting all my plants down with scissors. Most efficient way to learn is to go on plant/foraging/herb walks in your area. Eattheweeds has list of U.S. foraging teachers. Field guides, foraging/weed books/software, USDA plants & other web sites can be helpful, but slower going. It takes several seasons to become adept. 1:15 looks like Lamb’s Quarters. 1:11 – can’t see the leaves, but clumps like Artemisia genus in my area — plants in your area are quite different. Books by Thayer, Kallas are good, but you may need desert plant books.
