Medics battled to save Raoul Moat
Gunman Raoul Moat heart was still beating when he arrived at the hospital after being shot in the head, an inquiry heard.
An ambulance, which was part of the response team, said Moat took a "breathing" as he lay on the ground mortally wounded in Northumberland, last July.
He also said it was "fair" to assume Moat would not have survived even if his heart rate was "normal".
Doctors treated Moat "all the way to the hospital" where he was pronounced dead.
North East Ambulance Service Hazardous Area Response Team (Hart) manager Simon Swallow was part of a team that fought to save the life of the old porter.
He said the shooter had a "strong, normal" heart rate, but was not breathing during the 35 minutes of Rothbury dash to Newcastle General Hospital accident and emergency department.
He rushed from a rescue vehicle to the body Moat armed police after hearing a loud bang, the jury at Newcastle Crown Court heard.
Moat had lifted its sawn-off shotgun to his temple and pulled the trigger, a police officer told the inquiry last week.
Mr Swallow said he had to ask an officer where Moat had been shot.
He said: "I know it sounds weird bearing in mind that we are talking about a head injury a gun but he had his hood and cap.
"The policeman gestured with his arm and looked very briefly. It was a strange atmosphere."
Newcastle coroner David question of whether Moat Mitford showed no sign of life, Mr Swallow said: "Not at first, but soon after, and I mean seconds, he actually drew a breath important.
"After one great breath, he did not draw another."
Mr Swallow said his team would try to save the life of every accident that breathing or whose heart was still beating.
The porter was connected to the infusion and former equipped with a breathing mask and cardiovascular electrocardiogram.
Mr Swallow said: "His heart was fine, in normal sinus rhythm.He had a really strong release. His heart was normal.
"But he was not breathing, he was in respiratory arrest.
"It was a difficult situation to be in, knowing the extent of the injury."
Mr. Swallow has continued to treat Moat "all the way to the hospital," where an accident and emergency team, including a neurosurgeon was waiting.
