Chandler has more than twice as much campaign cash in bank than Republican rival

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Democratic U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler has more than twice as much campaign cash in the bank as a Republican rival who nearly unseated him last year, but the two were neck-and-neck in the latest fundraising period heading toward a possible rematch next year.

Chandler, who represents the 6th District in central Kentucky, raised $228,727 in the three months ending June 30, according to his latest campaign-finance report. Chandler ended the quarter with $561,419 in the bank.

Meanwhile, Republican Andy Barr reported raising $197,213 in just a three-week fundraising sprint after getting into the race on June 9. Barr's finance report showed he had $202,988 on hand at the end of the quarter.

The two waged one of the nation's closest congressional races in 2010, when Chandler won by a mere 648 votes. The final outcome was delayed until 10 days after the November election, when Barr conceded following a re-canvass of the results.

Barr, a Lexington attorney, said his latest fund-raising performance in such a short span was a sign of strong early support.

"The people of central Kentucky are tired of Washington politicians who can't balance a budget but are perfectly willing to dictate what kind of light bulbs we can buy," he said in a statement.

Chandler also said he was pleased with his fundraising but added, "Politically, my focus and the focus of every Democrat should be on the governor's race right now."

Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear, a Democrat, is in the midst of his re-election campaign. His Republican challenger in the election this November is state Senate President David Williams.

Early fundraising in the 6th District is setting up an expensive race next year. Chandler and Barr spent heavily on TV ads in 2010, as did outside groups in a year when Republicans won back control of the U.S. House.

Chandler has represented the district since winning a special election in 2004. The district is a mix of farms, small towns and the state's second-largest city, Lexington.

Chandler is the heir to a famous political name. His grandfather, A.B. "Happy" Chandler, was a Kentucky governor and senator.
