US Virgin Islands government to cut all civil servant salaries by 8 percent

CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands — The governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands is dropping a plan to dismiss 600 state employees now that legislators have approved a cut in pay for all civil servants.

Gov. John de Jongh says he has signed the bill to reduce all public salaries by 8 percent. The bill signed Thursday also establishes incentives to encourage government workers to retire after 30 years of employment.
