Friends come calling bearing fresh vegetables

We got some rain, not much, but every drop is appreciated. Some folks not far from us got two or three inches. The lake has come back up, but the water use will pull it down. They're calling for more rain any day, maybe we will get lucky.

Last Tuesday, Red Compton and I were down to the Dixie. There was a crowd there, so many folks I knew. Red and I got the special, barbecued chicken. It was delicious, and we had that famous Dixie banana pudding for dessert. It was just like old times down at the Dixie and owner Charles Rawlings was all smiles. Then and Red and I went over to Sycamore Antiques, and there was a nice crowed there. Darrell and his partners have sure got some nice things. Howard and Jane Burnette from Carolina were up for Jane's 50th class reunion, and they came out to see Della, my wife, and me. They both look fine. We have been friends for a long time. Jane and Howard were married in February 1964, and Della and I were married March 1964. The 50-year anniversary is slowly but surely coming to a head. It will be 48 for us next March; 2014 will be here before you know it. Jane's mother, Madge Bolling McCants, is still with us at 94 years old and doing great. Our friendship goes a long way back into the 20th century, gone but not forgotten. They were the good old days.

Thanks to my cousin N.C. Olgers for the delicious cucumbers he brought me. We have really enjoyed them. N.C. is an old garden man from way back. His dad, Norman Sr., was too.

Thanks to my pal Charles Veazey for the nice fat hen he brought me last week. She lays an egg every day. I guess I will have to find a rooster somewhere so she won't be lonely. Who knows? The old hen I call Lizzie might just raise a big family if all goes well.

My neighbor Catherine Williams is so good to me. She sent me a big plate of barbecued turkey necks last week for supper and were they good - plus two slices of her famous sweet potato pie. I had a feast. I had a big red garden tomato too. Where on earth can I find another neighbor and friend like Catherine Williams?

Thanks to Daniel Smith, who helped me in the museum last week. I sure appreciated him. He brought me some delicious vegetables too. He says he will be back when he can spend some time in the museum to check out everything. He knows he is welcome any time.

Thanks to my friends Roger and Barbara Jones for the wonderful beets and fresh snaps they brought me last week. They always have a good garden and they have a way to water it. With the weather being so unpredictable, you can always bet Roger and Barbara will make a crop.
