Forecast magazines spreading to world of high school hotbeds
This time of year, college football fans race to their local bookstore or supermarket to chase down copies of the 2011 magazines that give fans a chance to see what teams and players have for the season ahead.
Although colleges long have set standards with impressive magazines, high schools also have found their way into the market with mentions in nearly every top-rated collegiate periodical, giving players exposure on a national level.
Because recruiting has become so important in the landscape of football these days, many states have produced their own magazines that highlight players, provide team and player rankings and give a schedule for the upcoming season.
Dave Campbell’s Texas Football has set the standard by providing hard-to-acquire information on the Lone Star State.
Over the years, the Internet and fan websites have taken the pressure off magazines such as Campbell’s with year-round coverage, giving the yearly “bible’’ of Texas football a chance to expose younger players and provide more features.
These days, several football hotbeds have these annuals. Florida’s Friday Night Football Magazine is one of the most comprehensive.
The idea to take the collegiate format to the high schools emerged from sports publishing veteran Craig Baroncelli, who started AE Engine in 2005.
Baroncelli spent nearly 15 years at Host Communications, a sports-marketing company. Craig started at Host in 1991 as a staff assistant and was promoted every year while at Host. His client list included Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine.
Friday Night Football also publishes magazines in Texas, Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee.
This year’s edition of the Florida magazine spotlights a number of athletes from Miami-Dade and Broward counties, including the No. 1 player for the class of 2012, Norland running back Randy “Duke’’ Johnson as well as upper-tier seniors such as defensive backs Tracy Howard (Miramar) and Deon Bush (Columbus), and receivers Avery Johnson (Blanche Ely), Malcom Lewis (Miramar), Ricardo Louis (Miami Beach) and Amari Cooper (Northwestern).
American Heritage kicker Marshall Morgan, St. Thomas Aquinas defensive lineman Jelani Hamilton, Miami Northwestern defensive end Eric Kinsey, Norland lineman Ereck Flowers and linebacker Keith Brown also are mentioned as elite prospects.
This 110-page almanac of player information, rankings and future stars (classes 2013-2015), also has coach and unit rankings as well as the preseason Top 25.
