Inventive pupils take part in go-karting challenge
Young people in school and Furness Walney Primary School took to the track in race cars they built themselves. Three teams competed in time trials held yesterday at Barrow in Cumbria Karting.
The cell cars were built in the clubs after school engineering.
Alex Newby, a learning mentor at Barrow Island Primary School, had the idea to develop a project using karts six years to help children with their transition to high school. Mr Newby secured funding from Barrow Engineering Project and worked with Jackie Watson, the project manager for Walney School’s engineering specialism and Scott Wilson, an engineering tutor at Furness College.
Year six pupils from Barrow Island Primary, Vickerstown Primary, South Walney Juniors and North Walney Primary attended Walney School each week to build a go-kart from basic parts with help from Walney School pupils.
Victoria Junior School, Barrow, and Broughton CE Primary School were invited to take their go-karts along for a friendly competition at Cumbria Karting, which owner Jonathan Chapman provided free of charge.
The pupils got kited out in drivers overalls and helmets.
They learned how to take the corners and the straights before completing their laps. Broughton School set the fastest time in one minute two seconds, followed by the Walney School transition team with a Vickerstown driver in one minute and three seconds.
The third fastest was the Walney car with a Barrow Island driver, in a time of one minute six seconds.
Callum Rennie, 11, of South Walney Juniors, said: “It was fun, our car was faster than I thought it would be.”
Reece Keeble, 11, of Walney School, said: “Our car felt very, fast. It was really good.”
Dominic Ceiran Johnson, 10, of Victoria Juniors, said: “It was dead good. I was skidding in the corners a bit.”
Mr Newby said: “We are really pleased, it has been a big success. We would like to involve more schools next year.”
Mr Newby thanked Mr Chapman for his generosity in letting the schools use the facilities for free. The track owner was impressed with the teams, and said: “It’s a great project for the kids. It’s good to see them all having fun. They have done a really good job on their go-karts.”

She wasn't really crazy about it, particularly when we'd bring the go-kart engine into the kitchen and we'd work on it and wash the parts off with gasoline and kerosene in her kitchen sink. Then we'd build the engine on the kitchen table.

Investing In Go Kart Racing | THG Formulations
If you want to get into some form of motor sport, but are absolutely appalled by the costs concerned, perhaps you have overlooked Go Kart Racing. OK, nothing is cheap anymore, but go karting is relatively cheap compared to its far dearer cousins like Formula One, Formula Drifting, NASCAR and Cross Country Rallying. You can get into go kart racing as a spectator, as an investor in a team or as part of an active team as a mechanic or driver.
Or you could use go kart racing as a spring board into the dearer kinds of motor sport. You can learn a great deal about driving, designing and constructing cars by starting with go karts. After all, the principals are basically the same, but the parts in karts are a lot cheaper.
In the rest of this article, we will take a look at some of the parts and safety aspects of go karts along with rough typical prices.
The first thing you will need to investigate is the sort of kart you want. There are different levels as there are in other motor sports. as a beginner, you actually should start with the low powered karts, because you will have to learn a great deal of new driving skills and quite a few safety regulations before you move on to more highly-rated karts.
If you find the price of a new kart a bit high or if you would like to leap-frog over the lower levels of karting as quickly as you can, you could think about buying a second hand kart for the first few levels, only buying a new one once you get to the level of karting that you would like to be at. However, do not make the error of attempting to run before you can walk.
Entry level go karts are not costly. For instance, at the time of writing, a battery operated go kart costs about $300-$400+ while a petrol powered kart will cost $600-$700+
Although go karts have a very low centre of gravity and do not tip over easily, it can happen and collisions do occur so wearing the proper safety attire is essential. Again, you could purchase a second hand set of racing safety clothes, which are basically the same as for motorbiking, if you just want to get started on the cheap.
You will require a jacket and trousers or a one-piece jump suit; a helmet, gloves, a neck-collar and boots. This little lot could set you back anywhere between $300 and $400, but it will save broken bones or worse, particularly in the period a few months after you start when you think that you know it all. Accidents occur when people become over confident.
