ECAC 2011-12 Men's Hockey Composite Schedule Announced

Five schools officially open the 2011-12 campaign Friday, October 7 as Clarkson under new head coach Casey Jones will take part in the Kendall Classic, which began in 1993, by taking on Alaska-Anchorage, followed by facing-off against Alaska the next day. Colgate takes to the road during the first weekend of action to play in the Mutual of Omaha Stamped hosted by Nebraska-Omaha.� St. Lawrence will look to snap a three-game season opening winless streak (0-2-1) as it welcomes CCHA foe Ferris State to Appleton Arena for a two-game set. Rensselaer, which was 9-4-3 in non-conference action in 2010-11 season, will host Minnesota St.-Mankato to begin its 110th season of men�s hockey. Rounding out a busy first night of play for ECAC Hockey teams is Quinnipiac, which travels to Ohio State for two games. Quinnipiac swept the Buckeyes two years ago in Columbus, Ohio before splitting with Ohio State at the TD Bank Sports Center last season.

One additional ECAC Hockey team will take to the ice during the opening weekend, as defending Cleary Cup champion Union, under first-year head coach Rick Bennett travels to Army Saturday, October 8 to battle the Atlantic Hockey foe.

2011 ECAC Men�s Hockey Tournament champion, Yale will begin its season the weekend of October 28-29, as it defends its Ivy Shootout title. Brown, Dartmouth, and Princeton with new head coach Bob Pier behind the bench, will also begin play this same weekend at Thompson Arena in the four team event. �

Cornell begins the 2011-12 campaign before the Lynah Faithful Saturday, October 29 when it hosts Atlantic Hockey foe Mercyhurst in a non-league contest in Ithaca.

Harvard opens its season the weekend of November 4-5 welcoming Princeton and Quinnipiac to begin a four-game homestand at Bright Hockey Center.

League play officially gets into full swing Friday, November 4 when all 12 teams are in action to begin the 51st season playing two-game sets versus league foes. Travel-partner parings include Colgate-Cornell at Brown-Yale, Princeton-Quinnipiac at Harvard-Dartmouth, and Rensselaer-Union at St. Lawrence-Clarkson.

Nine-year-old ice hockey player Jack Cohen couldn’t have been more thrilled.

With his Miami Toros teammates, Cohen got a personal lesson on puck-handling from David Booth, star of the NHL Florida Panthers hockey team, on June 25 at the Kendall Ice Arena in the Hammocks, home rink for the junior league team.

It all came about because of Cohen’s inspiring words that led to his selection as the first winner of the Degree “Cool and Confident Kid” Award.

“I have great hockey sense,” he declared. “I can’t hear from my left ear, so I can’t hear where a player is coming from. But I seem to know where the puck is.

“My mom calls this my sixth sense, but I just call it playing hockey,” said the mopheaded forward, son of Jim and Dana Cohen of Sabal Chase. Jack will enter the fourth grade at Leewood K-8 Center in August.

Booth, popular Panthers forward, worked out with the Toros for over an hour at the Kendall Ice Arena rink before adjourning for a pizza party to celebrate Jack’s selection as winner of an inaugural Degree Cool and Confident Award.

That special designation for Jack led to the team’s clinic and a $500 gift from Degree Deodorant and USA Hockey for equipment and supplies for the Toros. Local league play continues in addition to freestyle skating at The Hammocks twin regulation-sized rinks.

Booth will direct a second VIP skills clinic Aug. 1-5 at a Coral Springs rink, offseason home for the Broward-based NHL team.

About the Panthers’ newest acquisition of Chicago Blackhawk defenseman Brian Campbell, Booth said, “He’ll be a great addition. “We need that kind of veteran playmaking ability on the power play.”

And young Cohen’s dream: “Sure, I’d love to play for the Panthers.
