Book lifts the veil on Scientology
The church is famously secretive and regularly fights back against anyone who tries to answer these questions. So most journalistic accounts of Scientology fall into two categories: ax-grinding expose or fawning apologism. Fortunately Janet Reitman finds a third way in her authoritative, absorbing "Inside Scientology": nuanced reporting that lets the facts speak for themselves.
Hubbard first created Dianetics in the 1950s as a self-improvement system: People would free themselves of petty problems using a technique called "auditing," finally reaching a state of mind called "Clear." Reitman convincingly explains the appeal of this DIY approach to enlightenment in post-war America. She gamely wades into Hubbard's bewildering array of processes, levels and doctrines that would become Scientology. That includes their much-guarded origin myth for human suffering: After a tyrant named Xenu committed genocide long ago, millions of traumatized human souls ("thetans") have attached themselves to us and must be audited, one by one, to save mankind. She details a world where Scientology "orgs" work to "clear the planet," chanting Hubbard's doctrines together every day, and working to discredit any "Suppressive Person" who might oppose their mission.
It's a strange mission, to be sure, but one that has deftly adapted to several generations of American culture. Taking the reins after Hubbard's death in the 1980s, young Miscavige "knew the future depended on recasting Scientology as a mainstream church," both for the "power religion had in the culture and its effectiveness at bringing in cash." He's the one who finally won the church's tax exemption in 1993 and masterminded the "Celebrity Strategy," which has so dramatically enhanced the church's visibility. But, Reitman shows, his biggest legacy may be the way he presided over one individual Scientologist's care.
The four chapters Reitman devotes to the tragic story of Lisa McPherson form the heart of this book. McPherson suffered a psychotic break after Miscavige had declared her "Clear," and because Scientology opposes the use of psychiatric care, even in situations of acute psychosis, McPherson put herself in the hands of the church. She eventually died at their "equivalent of corporate headquarters" in Clearwater, Fla. Reitman's reconstruction of McPherson's deterioration, death and resulting legal drama is a gripping case study in the kind of group think that Scientology seems to foster in its members.
