Oh, yeah, Kevin James. He's a keeper.

When you meet Kevin James, this thought comes to mind: How is it possible that he could be a movie star?

The Everyman comic looks like a mixture of Jackie Gleason, James Stewart and the guy at the end of the bar, with a hint of Fred Flintstone thrown in.

Yet here James is, doing publicity from the Mandarin Oriental Hotel's lounge, with its sprawling view of new York's Central Park 35 floors below.

On one side of James sits Rosario Dawson, the exotic beauty who starred in the film version of "Rent" and in Quentin Tarantino's "Grindhouse." On the other side is blonde bombshell Leslie Bibb, who had roles in "Iron Man" and "Private Parts."

The women are James' co-stars in "The Zookeeper," a comedy that opens today in local theaters.

It's James' name, however, that appears above the title on movie posters. The film's talking animals might be voiced by big names - Cher is a lioness, Adam Sandler is a monkey (what else?), Nick Nolte is a gorilla and Sylvester Stallone is a lion - but Kevin James is clearly the star.

Even if he doesn't look the part.

James carries 200-plus pounds on his 5-foot-8 frame and comes across as more of a professional wrestler than a movie star.

He's been criticized for his weight, but it's helped him land roles on the big screen. Yet James shrugs off the idea that he is merely another of a growing list of actors who are thrown into plots simply because they're fat.

He also discounts the possibility that he'll ever change dramatically.

"I do not think I'll ever be a 120-pound guy, but if I do, I'll just have to find some other way to be funny," he says. "I'll admit, though, that weight helps."

Additional career help came from a friend.

In 2006, Ray Romano gave James recurring guest appearances on his hit TV show "Everybody Loves Raymond."

That led to the development of James' own sitcom, "The King of Queens," which ran on CBS for eight years. He played an overweight delivery man named Doug, getting an Emmy nomination for his efforts.

It was a mall cop, however, that made him a bona fide movie star. In 2009, James co-wrote and starred in "Paul Blart: Mall Cop," a film with a flimsy plot and little comic momentum.

Going up against big-budgeted movies that were supposed to be blockbusters, "Mall Cop" surprised everyone, becoming the nation's top movie for its first two weeks of release. The film eventually raked in $219 million in box-office and video sales.
